The 8th intake of MSc. Biostatistics has commenced coursework this week Monday 04th September 2017 at Chancellor College. The cohort has 16 students who have reported for classes out of 19 who were selected. The week began with a 2-hour orientation and registration function that took place at Senior Common Room and was presided over by the Dean of Faculty of Science, Dr. Levis Eneya. In attendance were the Assistant Registrar - Academics, Mrs Linda Saka; ICT Director, Mr. Solomon Dindi; College Finance Officer, Mr. Peter Nakoma; Deputy Head of Maths Science Department, Mr. Elias Mwakilama; and PG Coordinator for the MSc. Biostatistics, Mr. Tsilizani Kaombe.
The Dean welcomed the new crop of MSc. Biostatistics students to Chancellor College and advised them to take their studies seriously as they go through their coursework in the next one year. He further reminded the students that the programme is of two years and that it is expected of each student to make an effort to finish within time. The Assistant Registrar, in turn, advised the students to follow all College rules governing their stay at Chancellor College, be it rules to do with their academic, social, and personal life. She additionally asked the students not to hide their personal pscho-social problems affecting their studies at the College but share them with relevant offices such as office of Dean of Students, Registrar, or College Clinic for help. She advised all students to ensure that they are registered with the College system within two weeks.
The ICT Director introduced students to various e-services available at the College, such as VPN and Google Classroom that aim to aid their learning. He advised the students to utilize these services. He also emphasized the need for students to register through their students' online portals and access some services available at their portals. On his part, the College Finance Officer pleaded with students to use their personalised bank account numbers when paying tuition fees at the bank and that bringing cash or paying through any other College accounts is not allowed when making fees payments. As for the Deputy Head of Maths Department and PG Coordinator for the programme, it was all smiles to receive a new cohort of the Biostatistics masters programme as this will contribute to the growth of the programme which has been reaching out to many young men and women in the region for the past 7 years.
After the orientation, the classes followed immediately around 09:30 hours. The coursework will run until August 2018 afterwhich the students will conduct research in Statistics with application to bio-medical data. The programme acknowledges the support services offered to this intake during orientation and registration process by Maths Department Secretary, Ms. Dorea Mwale; ICT Technician, Mr. Chiwaya; and Department Messenger, Mr. Cosmas Samula.
